About Mrs. Butera
Hi! My name is Mrs. Butera. I currently live in Schaumburg, but grew up in Prospect Heights. This is my 6th year teaching second grade and my 9th year teaching in D62. I graduated from Western Illinois University in 2002 and earned a Masters in Teaching and Leadership from Saint Xavier University in 2008. I have recently become a new mom to a wonderful and beautiful little boy named Grayden.
Teaching second grade is like a dream come true for me. Looking back at all my years in school, second grade was my favorite. I love the content and the age of the students. They are going from learning how to read, to reading to learn. Math is my favorite subject, which is why I am very happy to be teaching second grade math to all of Terrace second graders. Learning different ways to compute is my favorite part of math. I enjoy seeing each students’ brain work differently, but in the end, still come out with the same answer. I like teaching students how to show their work using their words, numbers, and even an illustration. Making math fun is a very important goal for me.
I also love to read and write. I love teaching kids how to get their ideas down on paper in a rough draft and take those ideas even further to a well-developed paragraph. Reading to students has always been one of my favorite parts of the day. Getting into a book or story is so much fun. Knowing that we have creative and imaginative second graders will only make teaching reading even better!
And you can’t forget about Readers’ Theater! Watching students “perform”
at the end of the week, and knowing they practiced their part and learned new words is so enjoyable. I also love when the students “jump into the story” and really act out their part. What a fun way to improve independent reading, fluency, and comprehension!
Overall, I am looking forward to yet another great year here at Terrace. Ms. Giacone and I have had 3 successful years together. Each year gets better than the last. The teamwork that we present and instill into our students is a very important part of our beliefs as teachers.
Please know that the second graders are of my utmost concern. Should you have any questions, comments, or concerns yourself, to please give me a call or send me an email. I will get back to you as soon as possible.
